Arts and Culture

The Union Territory of Puducherry, the erstwhile French colony has many legacies of art & culture with a rich heritage. Separate Directorate for Art and Culture has been established during 1992 in order to develop the arts, literature, political legacies and remembrance of great poets. Maintenance of Romain Rolland Library and Public Branch Libraries , Museums and autonomous institutions like Bharathiar Palkalaikoodam and Pondicherry Institute of Linguistics Culture come under the purview of the Department of Art & Culture.

The Department of Art and Culture was bifurcated in 1992 from the Education Department and became a separate entity and has assumed significance over the years. The Director, Department of Art and Culture is functioning as the Head of Department for the Directorate of Art and Culture as well as for the Libraries and Museums. The Department has branch offices at Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam, headed by an Assistant Library Information Officer/Library Information Assistant.
